Are we in Mark Chapter 6 now? Made it to Mark Chapter 6 on our way. And Mark's Off- ! So I moved pretty quick, like you said. Or have been saying. It's the shortest of the gospels. So the earliest versions of Mark only had 16 chapters. The church added a couple of factors later on. But that means we're on the top of a 3 by chapter 8.

We'll be gone halfway through. That's where Mark and Mark are. And then Mark's Off-! We have a couple of cool stories. Actually, they kind of locked together. But the ones that got me for us to think about in the 20 are the very first two stories in Mark's Off-! And 6 versus 1 to 13. Those two stories there. And we talked last week about Jesus performing those healing miracles.

And I was thinking about that we don't know when Jesus will answer the prayer the way that we want. There's a lot of people who put his heels and he doesn't feel everyone. But he did feel some people. And one of the things I take from now is that I might as well ask him for the help that I need. Not because he has to answer or I can predict it he will, but because sometimes he does. And when he does answer prayers he doesn't think nobody else can do. So I might as well ask him, like a woman with the history of bleeding and in the dryer with the daughter who died.

And then he raised her from the dead. And coming out of that load near close we look at chapter 6 and it says that he went from that town where he healed the daughters from the dead. He went away from there and came to his home family and his disciples followed him. And we're going to announce that the 12th and they have just seen some pretty serious things and they've heard some parables. And he follows him back to the hometown of Magic which is a pretty small town. And his disciples called it and on Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue.

We talked about that last week about how a group of families when he had a certain number of Israelite families in a community you could set up a synagogue. That would be a collective gathering once a week facilitated. You may as you're lucky have a couple of scrolls and each week someone would get up and read. And then rabbis would move around and go to the different synagogues and take the scrolls that they had and teach the midraffing of their rabbis. He just goes back to his hometown and now he goes to his home synagogue so some of them very grew up and takes the synagogue or the scroll begins to teach.

And many of them were astonished saying where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom? What is the wisdom given to him? How is this mighty work done by his hands? Remember we talked about this before but if you were in the synagogue in Nazareth or Capernaum and you had grown up, if you small-town members in Israelite started not a dominant people group at this time. They're occupied by Rome.

They have Jewish tax collection, collecting taxes and studying it back to Rome. They're allowed a certain amount of freedom as long as they don't call trouble for the occupying government. They're not big-town. And being put small-towns Nazareth and Capernaum are kind of subsistence level herdsmen and fishermen. At one time I read that Nazareth and

we're talking about subsistence level. So you're in these small towns kind of backwards for the Roman Empire. There's a long-time desert. Not a lot of movement. People don't leave these towns very often and go off to the big city of Deuce. And when you're going to the synagogue over and over again and these rabbis are coming through, they're all teaching the same thing. Right? Because these rabbis learn from another rabbi. They memorize the scriptures, the Denday memorized his midrath or explanation about the scriptures.

So they come through and they hear the same teachings. And so when you read the gospel of Mark, one of his writings always is people are astonished at the teachings of Jesus. They can't believe it. As he says, he's glowing in mind because he's not a different reading than they've ever heard before. He's reading the same text but it's explaining it differently. And they're like, who gave this guy the authority? Where did he learn something? Where did he get something?

Did he make this up? Who did he think he is? That's where we're at in this small town in Nazareth with Jesus right now. Where did he get the term? Who did he get? How is verse 3? He is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and works it into this embalming. So Mary does not sing it's kids. And why not he sisters here with us?

And they took a friend to him? And Jesus said to them, a prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives. And in his own household. The last thing that I did was ask the guy you were, half of the tongue, take care of his daughter. And when his daughter died and Jesus said relax half day, he rolled a fever. Took me to skin to an absolutely impossible situation, helped my daughter who you've been.

Everyone said you could go. That's the last thing that I did deal with. This is not, he rolls into this in the house. Smaller towns are doing the way. It's hard to get much smaller than Nazareth and then I'll do this guy's ideas. And Jesus is structure here. Same side. Maybe sad. The prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives. And in his own household. And he could do nobody worked in. Except in the lay of hands on these sick people.

He was the mother like the best man I've ever worked. But he did. And he marveled because of their underlies. And he went about among the village group's teeth. I read this story about, I have people going to eat this, my first job coming out of seminary, sent me back to work at my dad's church and people were like, you know, I'm probably not like that on or except for in his home. So I've thought about this a lot. And one of the things I've thought about is like, what's it like to kind of laugh off the teachings of Jesus?

Like to like send him away, but I didn't he think he was. And the person you're talking about is Jesus actually. Like what is that? Do they have remorse later on when he's like raising lazzards from the dead? And coming into Jerusalem on the donkey is a triumphal entry. Are some of these people who are fluffing him off among the 500 that he appeared to after his resurrection?

I thought about that a lot. Like what does it feel like to look back? If you're in that synagogue and you're one of those people who's here to just teach early on and you realize later who he was and you miss the opportunity to join him, I've thought about that a lot. I guess I thought about that I would hate to miss it. I would hate to miss what God is doing in my midst.

And I wonder what it would feel like if it would feel any heavier than sometimes when I felt like I missed it here. If you missed Jesus himself. But the other thing about today is what the heck man? Jesus has his message from Isaiah something must be hate. Isaiah said that I would come to maybe maybe this is something. Remember in other places it says I've come to announce freedom for the captives, hope, the types of the blinds.

Remember and the stay is upon you now. Jesus is coming to an onset. The rain has gotten its own. The thing that you've been waiting for and it's happened, all humanity will be different going forward. That God is breaking into your midst again once it hasn't been since the Garden of Eden and like he will be forever. Why come in a way that can be so easily just meant?

Weird. I mean they are bothered because the brothers and sisters are there because they grew up among them. And of course they're not wrong. She did get away from them. And I mean we know that Jesus didn't sin but like he did abandon his parents at one time. Right? Like he was supposed to be with his parents walking back. I mean maybe they didn't ask him explicitly so he didn't disobey them directly.

But they lost him for like two days or something right? And that's the story we have. Like he's growing up in in in that little there with whole groups of people and they've lost him grow up. Like it's interesting that God put the palgetic message of the world into a group. Like who grew up among people and would be so easily dismissed.

That's what I'm saying. It's interesting that the palgetic message of the world comes to Nazareth in a way that could be so easily dismissed. That could be concerning for all. Like the incarnated God doesn't come with a lightning bolt on trumpets. It comes like as a dude who has brothers and sisters and grew up.

So I was thinking about that. And I think about like if that bummed Jesus out I'm making advice to people who grew up running. And he wants to like see some stuff and they are kind of pushing them off. So then I saw the next section next story in my bag and the different kind of way than I have before. Look at the next story. Verse seven.

So he called the 12th and began to send them out two by two. And gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff. No bread, no bad, no money in their bags. But to wear sandals and not put on two trimmers, just the one. And he said to them, we'll wait.

Partly out thinking, oh, okay. Like they're distracted by Jesus and they're not hearing what he's saying or they're dismissing what he's saying because they're distracted by who he is. So it's like I'll send out these things. And these guys, I'll send out these things with 12 of them. I'll send them out to my future and not all alone. And I'll just for them tell the story. I don't think it gets better if you send out the 12. And Jesus at least we know we grew up and had the foibles of growing up but didn't outwardly send these guys confidently did.

Right? Now he was a pastor for having to say. And all of them, as long as they're people, to some point because they're fishermen and they're other things, and these are small towns like I said. These guys going out two by two, they're running into some people that they're not saying. And Jesus takes the guy for message and this is early so I'm trying to think like they don't even all the way in Mark's awful. No person acknowledges who Jesus is rightly and who chapter eight right into the middle of the gospel.

And so like right now, we, nobody has even said that demons have said, oh, you're the son of man, what do you want with us? No, none of the disciples have even said, oh, yes, you have all the answers, you're the Christ. They haven't had a capacity to say Peter will in a couple of attachments. So it's like, what do they even really know right now? If we look at the previous chapter demons were teaching them parables in order that some may understand and some not in order that they may fear it and not understand it.

And he's explained to the disciples, I think I was trying to think of if I were in their shoes and I was like very like how part of the comprehending what Jesus has been telling me. And minimum, I know because we called me and I left one out and followed me. There's a degree of hope in Jesus. And he keeps saying that it's a rainy God of fear.

So Jesus sends out the 12th to a mouth. It's a rainy God of fear. Some hope in Jesus. The rain is out of fear. None. I mean, Jesus and Todd, I think if they were them, that's how they will understand all these practices and feelings we do. We have hope because though there is sickness and evil in the world, Jesus is entitled to that. Hey guys, someone from who can change things, who can fix things, who can hear things, Jesus is entitled.

I think they would have some hope. I think also they would recognize that there is, that this one who is entitled has offered with some sincere grace. I think they'll say, Jesus and Todd, and guess what? Your screw up. Don't cancel you out. Look at me. They might say.

I think if they were together, walk around to the fort, they don't have to understand everything. They don't have to understand the vicarious atonement, the reality of eternity, the eternal judgment to recognize Jesus is in cause. And to operate with grace, who doesn't relegate you to the thumb of your face as instincts or worse decisions. Instead of relegating, he might elevate you into a position that keeps you who are capable of, that you have trouble believing.

Okay, if they're going out, they don't have to understand everything, protecting that Jesus is in charge. There is some a home. And we operate with grace. And remember that a lot of times by this point, they had the incident on the boat where the storm came up, and they were like, Jesus, wake up, we're dying. And we combed the wind and wave. He stands up and says, try out, then he turns and looks at his side and says, why do you have that little face? There is an expectation that right in the island that Jesus is in charge, that you have hope, that he operates with grace, that we would live with faith.

That we would walk out here like government without any money or a person to go and tell you that something is happening, that Jesus is in charge, that he operates with grace. And so we live like both of those things are true. Right? You see how I'm like, it's really forgotten saying like Jesus is okay with ambiguity. There are things who vary ambiguous on and there are some things that are very clear. They don't have to understand everything yet to know both me, hope, grace, faith.

Jesus is in charge. We forgive. We can live like both things are true right now. And so I think that's kind of how they go out. That's about what they have. And they've been everything on Jesus at this point already. They love to whatever they were doing, they're following the guy around, so they go out and try. Right? And Jesus preps them. If I go out, don't take any money or any extra clothes, when I was carrying a bag, and he said to them, verse 10, whenever you enter a house, stay there and clean the part in there.

And if any place will not receive you, and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And the case kept out many demons and anointed with oil, many who were sick and healed them. Of course, he's out there again more.

He has got this life all clean, the current escaping message of hope, grace, and faith. And he puts it in these dudes who are easy to reject. He prepares them. Some people will not like it and puts the dust on them to their own judgment. The way Luke remembers it, he says the way Luke, whoever tells you about it, the way they remember it is that Jesus said,

straight to death, false, and free, and it will be better for those, but it's a solid memorial than those towns in the daily country. Because I have done with them if they don't hear the message that comes to them. I mean, it's just interesting all the work that goes into wrestling humanity for my first.

Like restoring the image of God in his creation in order that we might have a semblance of the life we were intended for or move towards the life eternal, but it's the size of it. So much work goes into it. And then when the message gets here, it's in Jesus from Nazareth. We had brothers and sisters, and these young dolls were so easy to reject.

All right, second minute. Certainly he could have come, like in some kind of age-athreatable for magic. Something like something up out of the sky, like trumpets, and something like more like a hoot or something. Something unmistakable, walking down and grown, intimidating man from Mount Olympus with lightning coming from his hand and thunder from his feet.

Instead of like the dude that left his parents, like a Passover and the town structure and the sister man. This is like classic cloud of Israel. Remember when the federal treasury goes into demonstrate to you the classic god of Israel, but the one that occurred to me first.

Remember when God was committed, Abraham Isaac and Jacob, then in order to preserve them from the famine, they go into Egypt. And then with Joseph, the Israelites, Egypt thrives while the rest of the world suffers under famine. And in that Friday, then they build a stronger military power for the reason of the day. They subjugate the Israelites for 400 years.

Israelites are played 200 years? 400 years outside. 400 years is your life are played, right? And then God miraculously comes and demonstrates in the 10 places authority over all the Egyptian gods. They get to leave. Now they take the plunder of Egypt with them. A million of them walking out of Egypt into the desert. They come to the Red Sea. The Red Sea, Al-Tereb Sea, down the raffle, keeps defeated all of the divinity of Egypt, all of the gods.

They need with power to defeat all of the military power. The wands of them in the Red Sea, they go to Sinai. He takes the mountains for them and demonstrates his authority and power in unmistakable ways. And then they resend the emissaries out to take here's the land I'm going to give you. I just conquered this power. Now we're going to conquer this power. I'm going to give you land flow in the milk and honey, walled cities, wine, vineyards, ready to go.

Birds, you can walk in and paint. This will be yours. And the Israelites, remember? They stay there in the desert and the gods go and look at it and they come back and they go. No way, man. That is fubile for all the months of clay. No way they can take that. What does the god of Israel do?

Okay. Now me on the whole generation dies. I'm saying that like something about the god of creation, like that Abraham as you can see, that are now the god of Christ in this church. Where the like frailty of the gospel. The Israelites had the opportunity in the desert to believe they were slaves and also they are conquerors.

Both. They did not need to forget a bandon. They could say yes. We have slavery in them. And also because of the god we have conquerors in us. There's something about the death where the frailty and the power always come together. Where the salvific message of the world doesn't come, drop down on high, unentakable, all majesty.

There is majesty in it, a host of angels come upon us. And there is also bloody birth in the manger. Both. The disciples don't speak to be the master that was the pastor, the leader that was the fisherman. They carry the prayer and the broken in the Twithom and also the message that pass out demons, shields people and sets their turn into earth.

This is good news for you. At no point in the history of humanity has God demanded perfection from his people.

At every point God has given it to them. Your imperfection and frailty cannot tarnish or undermine or undo the beauty and the perfection of the world. You are the master of the gospel that lives in you.

You are very friend anchor, talk collector and apostle. Both. Jesus is son and brother and soldier, the lisitor, mata'a. There is something about death where the new two sinies always come together.

frailty and power, weakness and strength, failure and perfection. This is two things for me very practically. It elevates my affectation of myself.

In me is the new creation in Christ, the inner bearer of God in the world. In me is the salvific gospel for humanity. Not for nothing. That like some dumb young disciple I would go out into the world. No money, no eccentric hope, great faith.

I must have it all figured out. Some things I know, some things I don't. The things I know overwhelm and overpower everything that I don't even. My failure. Which persists. Both. You have immense capabilities, potentials and calling.

Because Jesus has power, he operates with grace and calls you to faith. And you will fail your potential today, probably. It's okay. It'll be there tomorrow. I don't pray to people who believe the gospel, friends. Thank you for your good news.

It is sometimes too good to be true. That we could be conquered even though we have slaves, that we could be apostles, even though we are tax collectors. He loves the faith to believe it and the courage to live as though your gospel were true today. And Jesus name would pray to men.
